چکیده

The measured low initial sticking probability of oxygen molecules at the Al(111) surface that had puzzled the field for many years was recently explained in a non-adiabatic picture invoking spinselection rules [J. Behler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 036104 (2005)]. These selection rules tend to conserve the initial spin-triplet character of the free O2 molecule during the molecule’s approach to the surface. A new locally-constrained density-functional theory approach gave access to the corresponding potential-energy surface (PES) seen by such an impinging spin-triplet molecule and indicated barriers to dissociation which reduce the sticking probability. Here, we further substantiate this non-adiabatic picture by providing a detailed account of the employed approach. Building on the previous work, we focus in particular on inaccuracies in present-day exchange-correlation functionals. Our analysis shows that small quantitative differences in the spin-triplet constrained PES obtained with different gradient-corrected functionals have a noticeable effect on the lowest kinetic energy part of the resulting sticking curve.

Non-adiabatic effects during the dissociative adsorption of O2 at Ag(111)? A first-principles divide and conquer study

We study the gas-surface dynamics of O2 at Ag(111) with the particular objective to unravel whether electronic non-adiabatic effects are contributing to the experimentally established inertness of the surface with respect to oxygen uptake. We employ a first-principles divide and conquer approach based on an extensive density-functional theory mapping of the adiabatic potential energy surface (P...

Dissociation of O2 at Al(111): The Role of Spin Selection Rules

A most basic and puzzling enigma in surface science is the description of the dissociative adsorption of O2 at the (111) surface of Al. Already for the sticking curve alone, the disagreement between experiment and results of state-of-the-art first-principles calculations can hardly be more dramatic. In this paper we show that this is caused by hitherto unaccounted spin selection rules, which gi...

DFT studies of oxygen dissociation on the 116-atom platinum truncated octahedron particle.

Density functional theory calculations are performed to investigate oxygen dissociation on 116-atom truncated octahedron platinum particles. This work builds on results presented previously [Jennings et al., Nanoscale, 2014, 6, 1153], where it was shown that shell flexibility played an important role in facilitating fast oxygen dissociation. In this study, through investigation of the larger pa...

THE ACTIVATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE AT A MAGNESIUM (1 00) SURFACE THE ROLE OF OXYGEN TRANSIENTS

X-ray photoelectron and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopic (XPS-HREELS) studies have shown that the adsorption of carbon dioxide at Mg(100) surfaces at 80K is followed by a dissociative reaction leading to the formation of a metastable surface carbonate above 80K. The formation of a carbonate species is proposed to proceed through oxidation of C0 (g) by an active oxygen su...

Application of Chemometrics in determination of the effects of ionic and non-ionic surfactants on ac-id dissociation constant (pKa) of Meloxicam using spectrophotometric method

The purpose of this study was to determine the acid dissociation constants (pKa) of meloxicam in the presence of various surfactants including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as an anionic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a cationic surfactant and Triton® TX-100 (TX-100) as a non-ionic surfactant in different pre-determined concentrations. The related pKa was determined spec...
